Barbecue Turkey Meatballs with Homemade BBQ Sauce and Cornbread


I have made these meatballs for years with store-bought BBQ sauce, and although they were always a favorite – my efforts to remove processed foods from my family’s diet made me realize just how processed store-bought BBQ sauce is, with loads of added sugar, synthetic colors and nasty preservatives. Making homemade sauce is easy as pie……. did someone say pie…………… sorry, ahem, it’s super easy and worth it because it is so delicious.

I served the meatballs with scrumptious homemade cornbread – and I promise that after making this, you will never buy a mix again!

The Recipe

Barbecue Turkey Meatballs with Homemade BBQ Sauce

Makes about 15 meatballs



  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and spray a 9 x 13 baking dish with non-stick spray.
  2. Lightly combine turkey, oats, onion and spices in a large bowl.
  3. In a medium bowl lightly whisk egg and stir in evaporated milk. Pour into the meat mixture and combine.
  4. Using your hands or a scoop, form meatballs about 1.5 inches in diameter and place them in columns of three in the baking dish. You should end up with about 15 meatballs.
  5. Spoon the BBQ sauce over the meatballs, covering each one well. You may have some extra leftover – you don’t have to use all the sauce, depending on your tastes.
  6. Bake for 1 hour or until internal temperate reaches 165 degrees.

Old Fashioned Cornbread
Adapted from Bob’s Red Mill

Makes 9-12 squares, depending on how you cut it



  1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees and spray an 8 x 8 baking dish with non-stick spray.
  2. Mix all dry ingredients except cornmeal into a bowl.
  3. Whisk in cornmeal, then add egg, milk, butter and yogurt. Whisk until smooth.
  4. Pour into dish and bake for 20-25 minutes.
